HHS Secretary Outlines Suicide Prevention Efforts

Highlights 988 lifeline and comprehensive national strategy to support mental health.

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra highlighted the most recent data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) during National Suicide Prevention Month. The administration showed that over 13 million adults seriously considered suicide in the past year, and almost 2 million made an attempt.

“This is both gut-wrenching and unacceptable. No one should go through a crisis alone, and no one should ever feel as if they are out of options,“ said Secretary Becerra. He said the administration’s strategy “sends a clear message to the American people: we are here for you.“

“No program exemplifies our commitment to prevent suicide better than the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. … In its first two years, the service has managed more than 10 million calls, texts, and chat messages from Americans seeking help,“ the secretary continued.

“Anyone who reaches out for help gets connected with a trained counselor who offers real support in times of crisis,“ he stated. “During National Suicide Prevention Month, we continue to look at ways to save lives and help people thrive. The fight against suicide is one we can wage together. … No one should go through it alone. Confidential help is available, and together, we can help prevent suicide.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Becerra and HHS officials as they seek to reach the American public with mental health information and support.
  • For Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Cohen and personnel to be prudent as they accumulate and publish suicide statistics and data.
